Welcome to the website of the

High Sheriff of Cumbria Samantha Scott

Sam Scott High Sheriff of Cumbria 2022/2023 in full ceremonial dress

I was appointed as King Charles III’s first High Sheriff of Cumbria on Thursday 30th March 2023. The ceremony took place in Kendal Town Hall where my Declaration was signed before a magistrate in the company of the Vice Lord Lieutenant, His Honour Judge Barker and The Mayor of Kendal.

The role of High Sheriff is an ancient one but still very relevant today. I look forward to meeting and promoting many of the inspirational people and organisations who make Cumbria an exceptional place to live.

“Cumbria is often seen as a beautiful affluent area to live and work but there are many hidden social needs.

As we move from the challenges of the pandemic to the financial insecurity caused by the cost of living crisis we are seeing more communities facing significant struggles.

Part of my role as High Sheriff is to engage and support those in the community that make a positive contribution to our wonderful county and I am honoured to serve as High Sheriff of Cumbria 2023.”

CUMBRIA WAY WALK
21st-28th April 2023

I am fulfilling a long-held ambition to walk the 73 miles of the Cumbria Way, in 8 days, visiting up to 25 charities along the route and raising funds for the High Sheriff’s General Fund.

The walk passes through the centre of the county from Ulverston to Carlisle and will be an opportunity to appreciate both the beauty of our natural environment and several Lake District’s communities as I pass through farms, villages and towns.

Communities within this mostly rural environment face a diverse number of challenges and my aim is to raise awareness of the charities who support the needs of the most vulnerable within our communities. I am looking forward to meeting the staff and volunteers of these charities and learning more of what they do.

The High Sheriff’s General Fund is managed by Cumbria Community Foundation and charitable groups can apply for grants and it is also the source of the High Sheriff annual awards.

This is the only fundraising I intend to do during my term as Cumbria’s High Sheriff, my target is £10,000 and I would encourage you all to support the charities of Cumbria by following the link:

If you happen to see me as I walk, please stop me and say hello!

Role of the High Sheriff

High Sheriff Shrievalty Badge

There is a High Sheriff in every county in England and Wales, and their history and tradition dates back before the Norman Conquest. The Office is the oldest Royal appointment. As the holder in Cumbria today of this entirely voluntary, non-political office, I hope to take an active part in supporting, encouraging and promoting the many voluntary organisations, to bring people together within the county and to support crime prevention, the Judiciary, the Police and other law-enforcement agencies, the emergency services and the other public and voluntary sector and community services that work towards making Cumbria a better place.
